A warm September evening, layers of mountains, and the kind of reaction you hope you’ll have photos of forever. Andy and Richelly’s surprise proposal at Max Patch was such a joy to photograph.
These two came to Asheville from Miami, but the mountains already hold a special place in their hearts. They love being here and hope to call this area home one day, which made a mountaintop proposal feel especially meaningful.
And between Richelly’s reaction, their nonstop smiles, and an incredible sunset, there was so much to love about this evening.

Andy reached out while planning their upcoming trip to Asheville. He knew he wanted to propose somewhere beautiful in nature and was open to ideas, so we talked through a few mountain and waterfall options before landing on Max Patch.
We planned for the proposal to happen before sunset, leaving plenty of time afterward for photos together as the light softened.
One of the things I help with as a proposal photographer is figuring out those little details ahead of time: when to arrive, how I’ll recognize you, and how I can photograph the moment without giving away the surprise. Since Andy and Richelly were traveling together, we coordinated through email and text so he could keep everything under wraps.
Andy wanted to keep the proposal simple and personal. He had a few things written down that he wanted to say to Richelly before asking her to marry him. A mountain view, words from the heart, and the two of them together—it was such a sweet plan.

When Andy got down on one knee, Richelly’s reaction was absolutely wonderful.
Her hands went straight to her face, followed by the biggest smiles. There was so much excitement between them, and I loved capturing each little change in her expression as the moment unfolded.
These are some of my favorite photographs to make. The surprise is real, the emotions happen quickly, and every image tells another little piece of the story.
And the ring! Andy chose a stunning ring, and we absolutely had to capture a few close-ups once it was on her hand.

After the proposal, I joined them for photos together, and the evening felt so easy and fun.
They were laughing, holding each other close, and soaking up the fact that they were engaged. We had playful piggyback rides, sweet kisses, and plenty of moments where they were simply looking at each other with the happiest expressions.
That mix is what I love about photographing proposals: documenting the question itself, then giving you space to enjoy everything that comes afterward. I’ll offer gentle direction for photos, but there’s also room to move around, be silly, and celebrate together.
As the sun dropped lower, the light turned beautifully golden. The grasses glowed around them, the mountains softened into the distance, and we finished with some of my favorite images of the evening—Andy lifting Richelly up and dipping her back as they laughed and kissed.
It was warm, romantic, and full of energy. I left with so many favorite moments.

If you’re imagining a mountain proposal near Asheville, Andy and Richelly’s evening is a beautiful example of what that can look like: a short hike, a meaningful surprise, and time afterward to enjoy the view together.
The route we planned was about three-quarters of a mile up to the proposal area. There is uphill walking involved, so comfortable shoes and enough time to take your time are helpful. We can talk through the hike and whether it feels like a good fit for you and your partner.
For photography, I love planning around the hour leading up to sunset. On an evening like this one, that gives us softer light, beautiful mountain layers, and the chance to photograph you together as the sky changes. The timing depends on the season, weather, and location, and I’ll help you work out those details.
You can reach out even if you’re still deciding where or how to propose. Helping you choose a setting and make a plan is part of the process, and then, when the moment comes, you get to focus on the person in front of you.
Andy and Richelly, thank you for letting me capture such an exciting part of your story. I hope these photos always bring you right back to how it felt to be together on that mountain, newly engaged.
